Kim Paul Nguyen is 27 years old and he is riding planet earth. Well, to Copenhagen, so about half of it. Or 3 eighths. Its an approximation. Kim’s professional background is in social work, he has been working in the child protection field for the past eight years, interspersed with a lot of traveling, some environmental volunteering and a few too many hours watching Liverpool miss out on the title again. He is also a documentary video maker, a cycling enthusiast and an environmentalist.

Richard Kimberley, a gifted artist from Staffordshire in the UK, has recently joined in, bringing passion, enthusiasm and humour. Richard has taken on responsibility for Ride Planet Earth in the UK and has begun doing exceptional work with organisations there promoting sustainable transport. We hope he can stay with us all the way to Copenhagen. He is also an excellent photographer and you will be able to see his Ride Planet Earth album shortly.

The Cycle Change Convoy journey from Brisbane to Turkey unfolded like this:

  • Kim started on 10th Aug 08 in Brisbane heading up the east coast of Australia to Cairns.
  • From Cairns he went westward to the Gulf of Carpenteria, before circling south-west through Australia’s Red Centre to Katherine and Darwin.
  • From Darwin Kim took a plane to Dili, East Timor, before cycling and taking ferries through the Indonesian archipelago to Sumatra.
  • From there Kim took a ferry to Malaysia, meeting Tristan Frost in Kuala Lumpur. The Convoy then cycled up the west coast of the peninsula of Malaysia and Thailand.
  • After Bangkok they took a train close to the Laos border and made their way from there to Vientiane.
  • Kim then headed north into China, spending over a month in the province of Yunnan, while Tristan returned home.
  • From there Kim reached Beijing, and cycled with a local, Yao, to the Great Wall of China.
  • Afterwards Kim entered Mongolia where he crossed the Gobi Desert to reach Ulaanbaatar. From there he cycled westward until he crossed into Russia at Tashanta.
  • Kim passed through Barnaul on a short stint in Russia before heading South into Kazakhstan.
  • Kim rushed through Astanta and Almaty before reaching Aktau on the Caspian Sea where he met Richard Kimberley.
  • They crossed the Caspian Sea to Baku in Azerbaijan from where Kim cycled along the Caucasus Mountains to Tbilisi in Georgia. There richard joined him to cycle onto the Black Sea and into Turkey.
